Created in 2000, the NCAI Digital
Divide Task Force provided a forum for tribal leaders to discuss
the critical issues surrounding technology in Indian Country with
leading policy experts, federal officials, and technology industry
leaders. It was designed to:
- Develop and support policies and legislative
and regulatory initiatives that promote equal access to advanced
telecommunications and information technology by Indian nations
- Promote partnerships between tribal governments,
tribal organizations, and non-tribal entities in a collaborate
effort to close the digital divide in Indian Country
- Serve as an information clearinghouse
to provide background information on technology issues affecting
Indian Country, as well as links to public and private funding
sources and legislation.
During the course of a year, the Task Force helped
to organize two Tribal Leader Summits and published "Connecting
Indian Country: Tribally-Driven Telecommunications Policy."
The Task Force held its first
Tribal Leaders Summit on November 16 during the NCAI's 57th
Annual Session in St. Paul, MN. The second
Tribal Leader's Summit was held on May 15 during NCAI's Mid-Year
Session.
As one result of the Task Force's work, NCAI has
established a Telecommunications Subcommittee as part of its official
Committee structure.
